ABOUT THE PRACTICE

Practice details

The practice is conveniently situated in Layer Road, Colchester and my consulting room is housed in a separate annexe to the house which is accessed from a side entrance. There is ample off-road parking and buses stop close by (see "Getting to the Practice by Public Transport")

The room is on the ground floor and is small, warm and comfortable. For extra privacy, the annexe has a lobby with outer and inner doors. There is a lavatory for client use.

Getting to the practice by public transport

The Layer Road area is reasonably served by buses. The No. 50 (Malting Green-Layer-Colchester) and No. 92 (Tollesbury-Birch-Colchester) services will stop outside the house if ‘Kingsford Cross Roads’ is requested. For the return journey there is a request stop directly opposite the house.

There are also 2 bus routes along Layer Road (64 and 64a) which turn off right into Shrub End via John Kent Avenue or left into Lordswood Road on the army estate. The walk to the house from the nearest stop takes around 5-7 minutes.

There are two railway stations in Colchester; Colchester and Colchester Town. The Colchester Town station is opposite the St Botolph's roundabout at the end of Mersea Road. Services to and from Frinton, Clacton, and Wivenhoe are available here. The Main Colchester Station is at the other side of town adjacent to a complex of roundabouts near ASDA, Bergolt Road, Turner Road, etc.. There is a taxi rank, but cabs caught from there can be quite pricey. A cheaper option is "PDQ" on 01206 540540 or one of the other private cab companies.

Framework for Private Practice 2011

This framework represents the commitment of both client and therapist to working together and clarifies the arrangements that are important for therapeutic work.

Appointments

The therapist sees clients on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays.  She will give notice of breaks at least 5 weeks in advance.  Sessions normally take place on the same day and at the same time each week and last an hour, however some people work better with 75 minute sessions and specialist work can take up to an hour and a half. Every effort is made to accommodate clients who, by necessity (e.g. shift work), need more flexible arrangements.  Sessions will not be held on Bank Holidays, but, if it is possible, an alternative slot during the Bank Holiday week will be offered.  It is helpful if the date of the last session is spoken about and agreed in advance so that an ending can be worked towards.

The limits of confidentiality

Confidentiality and privacy will be maintained within the therapeutic setting, except in rare and exceptional circumstances:

  • To maintain standards of practice, the therapist will periodically consult with a senior colleague. The client's need for confidentiality and privacy will be respected and maintained.
  • The therapist will take the precaution of entrusting the client's contact details with a professional colleague for the unlikely event of the therapist becoming incapacitated. In that situation the client would be informed and, if appropriate, offered information about further professional help.
  • Information will never be disclosed to others outside the therapeutic setting without the client's knowledge and/or consent except in rare legal circumstances or should there be a serious risk of actual harm to the client or others.

General
Since there is no waiting area, at the first appointment the therapist looks out for the client arriving and collects him/her from the drive at the appointed time. For subsequent appointments, clients are asked to arrive at the room at the appointment time and not to park on the drive more than 5 minutes in advance of appointments.

A speedy departure from the drive post-session is appreciated

Fees

  • The initial consultation fee is charged at a flat rate of £60
  • Session fees are generally £50 - £60

  • Limited day-time concession places are sometimes available and trainee and company rates are negotiable
  • Ongoing session fees will be discussed during the initial consultation and should reflect a balance between valuing the therapy and oneself and what is actually manageable
  • Pre-booked holidays should be discussed  during the initial consultation
  • EMDR and other specialist work will be charged pro-rata for the extra time
  • The regular fee for sessions cancelled by the client, with or without notice, will be charged.
  • The client is not expected to make any payment if the therapist is not available
  • Fees are reviewed annually
  • If fees are set artificially low because of a client's financial difficulties and changes for the better occur, it is expected that the client will begin to pay a higher fee before the annual review
  • An invoice is provided at the start of the last session of each month and prompt payments are appreciated
